This project was inspired by the owner’s appreciation of architect Luis Barragan, as well as a trip to China and a notable stay in a hotel with a highly functional floor plan. It was also a response to the pandemic; with many people transitioning to working from home, the owners wanted to build offices for their individual businesses as well as add a small apartment on the second floor for friends and family.
The owner’s primary residence was built out of adobe so we continued using that material for the offices, with the exception of the second story, which is stick framed for a more lightweight construction. The building is oriented to the south to maximize solar gain and daylight. The second-level apartment has a large roof deck with incredible views facing the Taos mountains. The exterior will be stuccoed to match the existing residence.
